Scouts BSA National Pike District’s annual Klondike Derby
January 25 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
FreeCARA is looking for volunteers for the Scouts BSA National Pike District’s annual Klondike Derby at McKeldin Park in Marriottsville, MD.
This all-day event is run by adult scouters and senior scouts in the Baltimore area to provide a competition event for the younger cub scouts and Webelo scouts who live in the area. The Klondike Derby consists of events based on Alaskan history from the Gold Rush days. Scout teams (called units) travel from station to station performing various problems presented to them by the scout leaders at each station. Some events are timed and some are team problem-solving exercises.
They will be panning for gold, crossing raging rivers on rope bridges, and demonstrating their scouting skills. Scouts travel from station to station as a team using a sled with runners and wheels propelled by scout power. Some of the sleds are rather creative. The event runs from roughly 0800 until sundown when all scouts should be off the course.
Audrey White W8AUD is the organizer for this event.
